Military and Veterans Affairs Jobs in New Jersey?

Hi there, NJ resident here. Recently I've been thinking of joining the military but also considering working directly in veteran affairs. Anyone here knows how I can serve in NJ's deployment military and veterans affairs? What kind of jobs are available and what do they involve?

There are many different opportunities to serve in both military and veteran affairs roles in New Jersey. If you're considering joining the military, all branches—Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force—have recruiting offices throughout the state. Each branch offers a wide range of roles, from combat to support roles like logistics, medical, and administration, depending on your interest and aptitude.

For veterans affairs, NJ offers a variety of positions through the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (NJDMAVA). These roles can include medical and healthcare positions, administrative roles, social work, employment and educational services, counseling, and veteran advocacy.

For example, as a VA vocational rehabilitation counselor, you'd work directly with veterans to assess their skills and help them connect with meaningful employment or access educational opportunities in line with their career goals. A VA social worker, on the other hand, might provide mental health support to veterans and aid them in accessing resources like housing, financial assistance, and healthcare.

The federal government also employs many veteran service officers at Veterans Affairs offices across NJ. Their role involves advising veterans about benefits they're entitled to receive, assisting with filing claims, and navigating the VA bureaucracy on their behalf.

To find and apply for these jobs, you should regularly check the NJDMAVA's official website and USAJobs, the US federal government's official employment site. Also, keep in mind that jobs within the veterans affairs department often require some sort of higher education, usually a bachelor's degree, while military roles might start from a high school diploma or equivalent. The experience you gain in the military, however, could certainly be beneficial if you chose to transition to a veterans affairs role later in your career.

Finally, remember that this is a significant commitment and will require a great deal of effort and dedication. It's advised to carefully consider all these options and speak with current professionals in these areas, if possible, before making your decision.
