Hey fellow students, I'm from the West Coast and considering applying to schools in North Carolina. Got any experiences or thoughts about public colleges in NC? What's the academics, student life, and overall feel like?
Respondent 1:
As a current student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I can tell you that the academics are really strong, especially if you're interested in majors like journalism, business, or public health. UNC's journalism school is one of the best in the county, the business school is highly regarded, and the Gillings School of Global Public Health is top-notch, too.
Looking at student life, UNC Chapel Hill, like many other colleges, has a wide variety of activities for students - clubs, campus events, sports, Greek life, and more. Everyone can find their tribe here. There's a real sense of community, which is something I personally love about it.
That being said, every college in NC has a different vibe, just like anywhere else. NC State has a strong engineering program and a big emphasis on tech, whereas UNC Wilmington is near the beach and has a more laid-back vibe. Also, remember, the weather in NC is a bit different from the West Coast, so you might need some time to adjust to that!
Respondent 2:
Adding another perspective here: I went to Appalachian State University, which is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains region of North Carolina. It's a public university but smaller compared to UNC Chapel Hill or NC State, and the proximity to the outdoors gives it a very different vibe.
The academics are strong and there's a real focus on sustainability and environmental science due to the location. The smaller size of the school also means smaller class sizes, which can be a nice perk. The campus scenery is breathtaking with the mountain setting, especially in the fall.
Student life is a mix of outdoor activities – hiking, rafting, skiing in winter, and a range of clubs and organizations. It's a college that feels tightly knit, so if a smaller feel is what you're looking for, Appalachian State might be a good fit.
Respondent 3:
At NC State University in Raleigh – the academics lean heavily towards STEM, but the humanities are also well supported. The College of Engineering is particularly noteworthy, also their forestry and environmental resources. NC State is also part of the Research Triangle with Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill, meaning lots of opportunities for research and collaboration.
The student life is pretty vibrant, primarily because Raleigh is a city environment with easy access to cafes, shops, and off-campus activities. On-campus, there’s a good mix of clubs and organizations, and Wolfpack sports are a big deal.
Remember, it's best to visit these campuses (at least virtually) to get a feel of where you might fit in. Good luck with your application process!
