Can a deployed military service member buy and bring back souvenirs?

Hey everyone, I was just thinking about military deployment and it came to my mind, are service members allowed to buy souvenirs when they're deployed and if so, are they allowed to bring them back home?

Yes, military service members can buy souvenirs during their deployment, and they are generally allowed to bring them back. However, there are a few important guidelines they must follow.

First, the souvenir must be legal both where they are deployed and in the States. Souvenirs that break local law or U.S. customs regulations are obviously off-limits. These could include objects made from endangered species, certain types of foods, or items that have historical or archaeological value in the country where they're purchased.

Second, there are restrictions on anything that could be understood as war trophies, which are items taken from enemy combatants or found on the battlefield. The Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) prohibits taking or bringing back war trophies without explicit permission from higher authorities.

Lastly, the item must not interfere with their duties or take up too much space in their personal bag. Remember, the primary reason for their presence abroad is their military duties.

So, while there is certainly room for service members to bring back souvenirs, it's important they're mindful of the rules. As always, if there are any doubts, it's best to consult a superior or the legal advice available to military personnel.
