I'm considering a career in the military, specifically the Army Rangers. I wanted to know if it's possible to join the Rangers without having been deployed before. Is prior deployment a requirement for this elite designation?
While prior military deployment can certainly provide valuable experiences and skills that might be beneficial in your goal to become an Army Ranger, it's not a mandatory requirement. Here's the general process:
1. The first step is to enlist in the Army. Your recruiter will help you decide the best job for you in the Army (your MOS - Military Occupational Specialty), then you'll attend Basic Training, commonly known as Boot Camp.
2. After Basic Training, you will go to your Advanced Individual Training (AIT) for your selected MOS.
3. If you qualify and show interest, you might have the chance to attend the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP), which is an intense eight-week course designed to test your physical and mental abilities. Completing the RASP and being assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment qualifies you to wear the Ranger Tab, but it's still not the final step to become a Ranger.
4. If you manage to complete the RASP and become part of the 75th Ranger Regiment, your journey just begins. To truly be a Ranger, in the full sense of the word, you will have to complete the difficult and grueling 61-day Ranger School.
You can learn more about the process here: https://www.army.mil/ranger/. Please also discuss your career plans with an Army recruiter to get the most specific and detailed information, though. Remember, physical fitness and mental toughness are key for success in the Army Rangers.
Good luck in your journey!
