W&M vs. Virginia Tech: Thoughts?

Okay, so I'm caught in a bit of a dilemma. I have an interest in both W&M and Virginia Tech, but I'm finding it difficult deciding between the two. They both have pros and cons for sure. Any thoughts on this? What are some of the key differences in terms of campus life, academics, etc.?

Sure, I'd be happy to help you understand the key differences between William & Mary (W&M) and Virginia Tech.

Academically, W&M and Virginia Tech are known for different strengths. W&M, being a public Ivy institution, offers a strong liberal arts education with highly ranked programs in government, history, and philosophy among others. It also fosters a more intimate academic environment with small class sizes, which means you'll be receiving a more personalized education with closely knit relationships with your professors and peers.

On the other hand, Virginia Tech has strong programs in engineering, agriculture, and business. The school is larger and therefore has more course offerings and larger classes. There's also a more visible emphasis on research, and an array of opportunities for practical experiences like co-ops and internships.

In terms of campus life, W&M, located in Williamsburg, offers students a smaller, more residential college experience. The school prides itself on its historical roots and close-knit community feeling. The campus is in a more subdued location, which gives a traditional, small-town college vibe. On the downside, some students find the social scene a little quiet compared to larger universities.

Contrarily, Virginia Tech, located in Blacksburg, is larger and offers a robust social scene. Greek life, sports, and clubs/events are big here, providing a traditional large university experience. The school is also well-known for its school spirit, particularly due to its standing in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference.

Another important aspect to consider is the student body. W&M typically supports more intellectual, somewhat quirky students who foster a tight-knit community. In contrast, Virginia Tech, with its larger size, has a far more diverse student body with varied interests. This might suit you if you're looking forward to experiencing many walks of life in college.

Lastly, considering financial aspects might help you choose between these two schools. Both schools provide quality education, but depending on your financial circumstances and what financial aid they may offer, one may be a more viable option than the other.

Remember, there is no "right" or "wrong" choice here. It highly depends on what you are looking for in your college experience. Visit both campuses, if possible, and try to imagine yourself as a student there. Pay attention to where you feel more "at home". Good luck with your decision!
