Choosing Between Lafayette and Colgate

Hi! I've been accepted to both Lafayette and Colgate, but I'm having a really tough time deciding. Does anyone have any personal experiences to share or suggestions on what should influence my decision?

Congrats on getting accepted to both schools! This is a common theme, but try to think about what kind of college experience you want - both academically and socially. Colgate and Lafayette each have their unique attributes, and I hope to provide some insights.

Starting with the academic portion, the faculty-student ratio at Colgate is slightly lower (10:1) as compared to Lafayette (9:1). This could mean more opportunities for small group discussions, closer faculty-student relationships, and possibly more individualized attention in your studies at Colgate.

On the other hand, Colgate has a larger student population which could translate to a wider variety of course offerings and extracurricular activities. They also have a strong emphasis on undergraduate research opportunities which might appeal to you if you're considering that path.

As for the social environment, Colgate's student life thrives in a prosperous town and is arguably more 'preppy' with strong Greek life, if that appeals to you. On another note, it has an excellent study abroad program if you're interested in exploring different cultures.

Lafayette, meanwhile, exudes a more down-to-earth vibe in a small city environment. Its campus has a close-knit community, so if personal connection is something you value, this might be more appealing.

Lastly, consider your prospective major if you have one. Look at the departments and see which school has stronger faculty and resources in your field.

In the end, there are many factors to consider. It could be helpful to visit both campuses, if possible, to get a sense of the community and environment. Also, speaking with current students or alumni could provide another layer of personal insight to inform your decision. Either way, both are excellent choices. Best of luck as you make your decision!
