Deployment of Active Duty Military On US Soil

Just ran into this thought and can't seem to find a concrete answer. Can active duty military personnel be deployed on US soil? Would be super helpful if anyone has insights on this.

Active duty military can indeed be deployed on U.S. soil, but typically these deployments are for specific types of functions and under special circumstances. The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, with a few exceptions, prohibits the use of U.S. military forces to perform the tasks of civilian law enforcement such as arrest, apprehension, interrogation, and detention unless explicitly authorized by Congress.

National Guard and Reserve units, however, which are under state jurisdiction, are not subject to the Posse Comitatus Act and can be used by state governors to assist with law enforcement during emergencies, disasters, or civil unrest.

Also, active-duty troops can be used for other domestic missions that do not involve law enforcement, such as disaster relief or protecting critical infrastructure. This was seen in the past during Hurricane Katrina and the COVID-19 pandemic, where active duty military personnel were involved in relief efforts and logistical support.

Remember, the laws and regulations on this subject are quite complex and detailed, so the generalizations made here may not cover every situation. While these are broad guidelines, the specifics can vary depending on a range of factors including the nature of the mission, the branches of the military involved, and the legal authorization provided.
