Military Branches and Tattoos

Yo! Quick question, does anyone know the policy on tattoos for the different military branches? I've got quite a few and I don't want them to hinder my chance of enlisting if I decide to go that route.

Hey, great question. Each branch of the military does indeed have its own policy on tattoos.

1. Army: The U.S. Army is relatively lenient. They permit tattoos on the hands and back of the neck. However, the tattoos must be small, not extending beyond a single band ring on your finger, and the one on your neck mustn't exceed one inch in any direction. Face, head, and ear tattoos are not allowed.

2. Navy: The U.S. Navy is one of the most relaxed. They allow neck tattoos, hand tattoos, and tattoos behind the ear. Sleeve tattoos are also accepted.

3. Air Force: The U.S. Air Force doesn't permit tattoos on the neck, face, head, or scalp. Sleeve tattoos are only allowed if they don't cover over 25% of the body part and must not be visible when wearing a uniform, such as long sleeve shirt and pants.

4. Marines: The U.S. Marines are a bit stricter. No neck, head, or face tattoos. Additionally, sleeve tattoos are not permitted.

It is always a good idea to speak directly with a recruiter for the specific branch you are interested in. They can provide you with the most up-to-date guidelines and potentially even waiver information if a tattoo falls outside of their perimeters. Policies can and do shift somewhat frequently, so be sure to get the most current information. Good luck!
