All about Military Ranks in Different Branches

Hi everyone, I'm currently doing a project on the U.S military and I need to understand the hierarchical structure within the different branches. Where can I find a list of ranks for all branches; Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard, in order of ascending? Thanks in advance!

Sure, I'd be happy to provide the rank structure for each of the branches that you mentioned. For ease, I'll provide the ranks in ascending order, starting from lowest to highest:

Army and Marines (the ranks are the same for both branches, just the titles differ slightly)

- Private / Private (E-1)

- Private / Private First Class (E-2)

- Private First Class / Lance Corporal (E-3)

- Specialist / Corporal (E-4)

- Sergeant (E-5)

- Staff Sergeant (E-6)

- Sergeant First Class / Gunnery Sergeant (E-7)

- Master Sergeant / First Sergeant / Master Gunnery Sergeant (E-8)

- Sergeant Major / Command Sergeant Major / Sergeant Major of the Army / Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps (E-9)

Navy and Coast Guard (same situation, titles are different, but ranks are equivalent)

- Seaman Recruit (E-1)

- Seaman Apprentice (E-2)

- Seaman (E-3)

- Petty Officer Third Class (E-4)

- Petty Officer Second Class (E-5)

- Petty Officer First Class (E-6)

- Chief Petty Officer (E-7)

- Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8)

- Master Chief Petty Officer / Command Master Chief Petty Officer / Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy or Coast Guard (E-9)

Air Force

- Airman Basic (E-1)

- Airman (E-2)

- Airman First Class (E-3)

- Senior Airman (E-4)

- Staff Sergeant (E-5)

- Technical Sergeant (E-6)

- Master Sergeant / First Sergeant (E-7)

- Senior Master Sergeant / First Sergeant (E-8)

- Chief Master Sergeant / First Sergeant / Command Chief Master Sergeant / Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force (E-9)

Keep in mind this only covers the enlisted ranks (E-grades). Each branch also has its own set of officer ranks (O-grades) from O-1 to O-10 and warrant officer ranks (W-grades) from W-1 to W-5. These vary more significantly between the branches. For a comprehensive list including those, I'd recommend the U.S. Department of Defense's website. They provide an extensive breakdown of ranks across all military branches, as well as insignia and abbreviations. Hope this helps!
