Deployment Priorities

Quick question: in the event of a deployment, who gets deployed first? Is it determined by rank, job role, or does it vary? Also, who tends to get deployed the most frequently in the military?

Deployment priorities in the military can be a complex topic. It's not quite so straightforward as who holds the higher rank or particular job role. Typically, the nature of the mission and the unit's readiness levels are significant factors taken into consideration.

In most cases, it is the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) or specific role that primarily decides who gets deployed first. Certain combat-related functions and high-demand roles such as infantry, field artillery, engineers, medical personnel, and logistics specialists often deploy more frequently or first due to their pivotal roles in meeting mission objectives.

Moreover, units that are considered “first to fight,” like Infantry Brigade Combat Teams in the Army or Marine Expeditionary Units in the Marine Corps, get deployed more often.

Additionally, the readiness of the unit (i.e., how well-trained, equipped, and prepared they are for the combat theater) and the specific requirements of the mission are also considered.

Now, this doesn't mean higher-ranking officers or personnel do not get deployed. Officers and senior enlisted leaders provide strategic leadership, and therefore, they too, are often deployed alongside their units.

Remember, though, that the frequency of deployment can vary significantly based on external factors, including geopolitical situations, international relations, and specific military strategies. Some service members may never be deployed, while others might see several deployments within their career.

It would be best to have a conversation with a military recruiter or similar military office to get the most accurate and up-to-date information.
