Confused about American University admissions

Okay y'all, slightly freaking out about American University. It seems like they expect some stellar grades according to the average GPA I've seen online. To anyone who's gotten in: what did your GPA look like? And what else do you think made your application stand out?

American University, like many colleges, takes a holistic approach to admissions – they look at your application as a whole and not just focus on your GPA or standardized test scores. That said, the average GPA of admitted students is typically around 3.65, but this can vary year to year. If you fall below that threshold, don't cross American University off your list. Your chances of admission aren't solely tied to this number, and admissions counselors are also interested in individuals who bring diversity and depth to their student body.

Other elements of your application can also make a strong impact. Being able to show consistent commitment or leadership in extracurricular activities can make your application stand out. These activities could be related to sports, clubs, volunteering, or even a part-time job. Admissions counselors are looking for students actively engaged in their communities and pursuing their interests with passion. Just remember, quality is more important than quantity. It's better to be highly involved in a few activities, rather than superficially involved in many.

Additionally, your personal essays can be a strong component of your application. Use them to convey your unique story, interests, and ambitions. Avoid topics that tend to be cliché—like sports victories. Instead, focus on an aspect of your life or identity that may not be clearly conveyed elsewhere in your application.

Finally, strong letters of recommendation can also help your application pan out. Choose recommenders who know you well and can vouch for your work ethic, perseverance, and potential.

But remember, every application is different. It's all about presenting an authentic version of who you are and showing what you'd bring to the American University community.
