Public Universities in Tennessee

I'm a junior seriously thinking about staying local for university. Anyone here know anything about the public universities here in Tennessee? What's the atmosphere like, and how strong are the academic programs?

Sure, I can help with that. Tennessee has several public universities. As for the atmosphere at each, it will vary, but generally, you will find that these universities offer a close-knit community feel, with plenty of on- and off-campus activities.

Starting with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), it’s the flagship campus of the UT system. UTK boasts a very lively, spirited campus culture, largely driven by the passion for their sports teams, especially football. In terms of academics, UTK's College of Business Administration is quite well-respected, and their engineering programs are also highly rated.

Next, the University of Memphis (UM) is another large public university. The campus is quite urban since it's located in the heart of Memphis. Academically, UM is known for its strong programs in health and human performance, journalism, and business.

Lastly, Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), located in Murfreesboro, has more of a suburban atmosphere. MTSU's College of Media and Entertainment is quite strong - particularly their Recording Industry Management program.

Keep in mind that while the academics at these public universities are strong, they could have a broader focus compared to specialized or private colleges. Every college has its strengths and weaknesses, and the best fit for you would depend on your interests and what you're planning on majoring in. I recommend visiting the campuses if possible to get a real feel for the atmosphere.

Also remember, admission to these schools is more than just about grades, universities look at extracurricular involvement, letters of recommendation, and personal essays, among other factors. So be sure to emphasize your strengths in these areas when applying. Good luck with your college search!
