Deployment of Military Cargo Pilots - what’s the reality?

I'm a junior thinking ahead about my career options post-high school. Being a military cargo pilot is on my list and I’d like to understand the role better. How often do military cargo pilots typically get deployed?

In terms of deployment, it varies depending on the specific branch of the military you’re interested in and the needs at that given time.

However, it's common for military pilots, including cargo pilots, to face deployment fairly often as part of their service commitment. The typical cycle might see them deployed overseas for six months, followed by six months at home for rest and training, though again, this varies.

An important point to keep in mind is that deployment doesn't necessarily mean serving in a combat zone. For a cargo pilot, deployment is often about transporting essential supplies, equipment, humanitarian aid, or personnel between different military bases worldwide. While the job does entail some risk, particularly when flying into or out of areas with ongoing conflicts, it's not primarily about combat.

Remember, before you become a cargo pilot, there’s a long training process involved. New recruits have to first pass through basic training and then complete a rigorous pilot training program, which usually lasts around 1-2 years. Upon successful completion, they'll then go on to more specialized training in their assigned aircraft.

Lastly, serving in the military is quite a commitment. For pilots, it typically involves a 10-year active-duty service commitment from the date they complete training and become a pilot, and that's with any of the branches. So it's definitely something to think very seriously about. Continue researching, consider connecting with current or former military pilots for their insights and if possible, speak to a recruiter to get a clear understanding of what the path involves.
