Introduction to the U.S. Space Force?

What's up, guys! So, I recently heard about the creation of the U.S. Space Force as a new branch of the military. Can someone explain what it entails exactly? What's its mission and how does it fit into the larger military structure?

Hey there! The U.S. Space Force was established in December 2019 as a separate branch of the U.S. military. It falls under the Department of the Air Force, similar to how the Marine Corps falls under the Department of the Navy.

The force's mission is to organize, train, and equip space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests in space while also providing space capability to the joint force. The Space Force is responsible for developing military space professionals, acquiring military space systems, and ensuring that the capabilities of these systems are integrated with the other branches of the military.

In terms of structure, the U.S. Space Force currently operates through three main components:

1. The Office of the Chief of Space Operations: This is basically the force's headquarters. The Chief of Space Operations oversees everything and is a full member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

2. The Space Operations Command: This serves as a field command, focusing on space operations such as managing satellites, cyber operations related to satellites, missile warning, and launch and reentry operations.

3. The Space Systems Command: This field command handles acquisition and development of new tech for the Space Force.

Overall, the U.S. Space Force was created with the understanding that the space domain is vital to the country's interests because of its importance for national security, economy, and scientific advancement. The objective is to ensure America's freedom of operation in this new warfighting domain.
