Accruing Leave While Deployed in the Military

Quick question for any military folks or people in the know, do military members accrue leave while they're deployed? And if so, how does that work?

Yes, military personnel do accrue leave while they're deployed. Members of the U.S. Armed forces accumulate 2.5 days of leave per month, no matter if they are in country or deployed overseas.

Over a full year, this translates to a total of 30 days. It's important to note, however, that while these days do accumulate, military personnel can only "bank" or carry over a maximum of 60 days from one fiscal year to the next. Any accumulated leave over this caps is forfeited if not used, though there are exceptions, such as the special leave accrual which allows service members to accumulate up to 120 days of leave in certain circumstances, mainly related to deployments.

Furthermore, the actual process of taking this leave, especially during deployment, may depend on operational requirements, mission specifics, commanding officer's discretion and other factors. It's always advised to speak with a direct supervisor or appropriate personnel officer for more specifics on the matter.
