Hi all. I'm a high school junior pondering life after graduation and the multitude of options that go with it. I've been thinking about maybe pursuing a career in the military, but I have a strong preference for jobs that don't require deployment. Are there non-deployable military jobs out there? Any insight would be awesome. Thanks, everyone.
While it's true that the military might require deployment, it's also important to understand that not every role in the armed forces is combat-based or requires deployment to conflict areas. However, keep in mind every military position carries the potential for deployment; the military needs to maintain flexibility and readiness to respond to any situation.
There are nonetheless some roles in the military that are less frequently deployed or have positions stateside. For example, you may consider roles in administration, supplies, healthcare, personnel management, and so on.
For instance, working in Military Intelligence can often mean stateside service, as it involves researching, developing, and presenting intelligence reports. Another example is a military healthcare role, such as a nurse or doctor, where you work within military hospitals or clinics at home.
Also, usually there are positions in the reserves or National Guard that may involve less time away from home, although training and service commitments are still substantial and domestic deployment is a possibility.
Keep in mind that non-deployable does not mean you'll never move. Most military members have a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) every few years, so you might still need to relocate frequently, but just within the U.S.
It's best to speak with a reliable recruiter from the branch you're interested in joining and ask them about their non-combat roles or roles with less frequent deployments during your initial discussion. They should be able to provide you with a list of jobs and the expectations for each one. Remember, enlistment is a big decision with a long-term commitment, so take your time exploring options and getting your questions answered.
