Can I change branches once I enlist in the military?

Hey folks, I'm a Junior and I'm seriously thinking about the military as a potential path after graduation. But what if I make the wrong choice about which branch to join? Is changing branches a possibility once I've already enlisted?

Changing branches after you've already enlisted in the military is possible, but it's not guaranteed and is typically a complex process. The official term for this process is "Inter-Service Transfer" (IST), and it requires approval from both your current branch and the branch you want to transfer to.

You would have to complete your current enlistment contract before requesting an IST. The branches tend to be reluctant about releasing folks to other branches, especially if that branch has invested time and money into your training, and particularly if your role is one where there is a shortage of servicemembers.

Keep in mind that each branch of the military has different requirements, including physical standards, ASVAB score minimums, and other criteria. Thus, you would need to meet the eligibility requirements for the branch you're looking to transfer into.

Finally, remember that transferring branches could involve going back to basic training for the new branch, as each branch has its own training programs and procedures, and they do not always accept the basic training from other branches.

In sum, while it's technically possible to switch branches once enlisted, it's typically difficult and involves multiple steps. Therefore, it's best to thoroughly research your options and talk to representatives from different branches before making your initial decision to ensure the best fit for your goals.
