GPA Calculation - How does it Work?

Hey guys, a logic question for you. If I've got a 94 in a class, how would that translate to my GPA? There's a scale, right? Can anyone break it down for me?

Sure, happy to explain! The U.S. educational grading system works from a GPA scale of 0 to 4.0.

In many cases, an A grade(90-100%), which would likely include your 94, is usually assigned a 4.0 on the scale. If we were to break that down further, a range between 90 to either 92 or 93 would be rated as an A-(3.7), and a 93 or 94 up to 97ish would typically be considered an A(4.0), while an A+ (4.3) would be for a grade above 97 or 98. Do note that this is a pretty common scale, but the actual specifics can vary between schools and districts. Some may not assign A+ grades the value of 4.3 and may simply consider them the same as an A (4.0).

For more context, a grade of B typically equates to a GPA of 3.0, a C would be a 2.0 GPA, and so on across the spectrum. The more A grades you achieve, the higher your overall cumulative GPA will be.

Remember, Honors and AP courses usually have more weight in certain schools, typically adding an extra 0.5 or 1 point to their GPA respectively. So, an A in an AP class could be seen as a 5.0 GPA sometimes, but how these classes are actually weighted will depend on your school’s policy.

It's best to check with your guidance counselor on how GPAs are calculated at your school.
