Admission Requirements for Georgetown?

Hey folks! Georgetown is one of my dream schools, but I'm not exactly sure what they look for in an applicant. What are the general requirements for admission? Do they place more importance on GPA, extracurriculars, or test scores? Or is it just a balanced mix of everything? Any insights would be super helpful.

Georgetown University takes a holistic approach to admissions, meaning they consider all aspects of your application, rather than subjecting it to a skewed focus on just one component like GPA, test scores, or extracurriculars.

Firstly, Georgetown does require all applicants to submit their SAT or ACT scores, as of the 2024-2025 application cycle. However, this doesn't mean they place disproportionate weight on these scores. They merely serve as one measure within the broader context of your application.

Your GPA and the rigor of your high school curriculum are, of course, quite important. Georgetown wants to see that not only can you maintain strong academic performance, but also that you've challenged yourself with difficult courses, such as AP courses, throughout high school.

Extracurricular involvement is also vital. While quality over quantity is often emphasized, successful applicants usually have a mix of both. In other words, they are typically highly involved in a few key activities (signifying depth), but also participate in a range of other activities (showing breadth). Georgetown is especially interested in seeing leadership roles and a high level of dedication.

In terms of essays, Georgetown is unique in that it requires applicants to submit a personal statement, school-specific supplements, and a "short essay." These provide a fantastic opportunity for you to showcase your personality, interests, passions, and how they align with Georgetown's mission and values. These essays can often tip the scale in your favor if you're able to craft compelling narratives.

Additionally, Georgetown requires three recommendation letters— one from a high school counselor and two from teachers. Approach teachers who know you well and can attest to your abilities and growth.

Finally, always remember that the application process is holistic. A strong SAT score can compensate for a lower GPA, vice versa, and so on. Do the best with what you have and present your most authentic self. Good luck!
