Understanding PSU's GPA Scale

Was just checking out PSU for my application list and got a bit confused about their GPA scale. Could somebody kindly explain it? What's considered a good GPA there, and how exactly is it calculated?

Sure, I'd be happy to help clarify!

Pennsylvania State University (PSU) uses a standard 4.0 grading system to calculate GPAs, similar to most other U.S. colleges and universities. When it comes to how GPA is calculated, each course grade is assigned a certain amount of 'quality points' (e.g., an A=4.0, A-=3.67, B+=3.33, B=3.0, and so on). To calculate the GPA, the total number of quality points earned in a semester is divided by the total number of credits taken that semester.

Now, "good" GPA at PSU can be understood in a few different contexts. If you're looking to be admitted as an incoming freshman, it's helpful to know that the middle 50% of admitted students at PSU typically have high school GPAs between 3.65 and 3.94 on a 4.0 scale. Therefore, a GPA within or above this range can be considered competitive.

However, if you're already a student at PSU, a "good" GPA is more subjective and depends on your specific goals. For instance, you might aim for a GPA of 3.5 or above if you're considering graduate school. Furthermore, to graduate with honors like cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude, you would need an approximate GPA of 3.5, 3.75, or 3.85, respectively.

One critical thing to keep in mind is although GPA is an important academic indicator, it is just one factor of multiple considered for both admission and academic achievement. Things like involvement in quality extracurriculars, demonstrating leadership, performing strong in challenging course rigor, or writing impressive essays also play a crucial role in college applications and overall academic success at PSU.
