Is it mandatory to take the PSAT?

I'm feeling a bit overloaded with schoolwork and extracurriculars. I'm wondering if I need to take on the additional stress of the PSAT, or if it's not a compulsory test? What are the pros and cons?

The PSAT is not mandatory, though taking it can offer several benefits—it serves as a practice run for the SAT, provides insights into potential areas for improvement, and could qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship if you score particularly high.

On the other hand, if you're feeling overwhelmed, it's important to consider your well-being first. College admissions processes recognize a range of accomplishments outside of standardized test performance, including your GPA, the rigor of your course load, and extracurricular involvement. If preparing for the PSAT is adding too much to your plate, it could be in your best interest to focus on maintaining good grades and putting your energy into activities that you're passionate about. This might better showcase your unique skills and talents to colleges.

Remember, if you decide to bypass the PSAT, there are other ways to prepare for the SAT should you choose to take it in the future. You can utilize free online resources, such as Khan Academy, or even consider taking practice SAT exams when you feel less stressed. It's all about balance and ensuring you don't burn out during these crucial high school years. Put your health first, and the rest will follow!
