Hello, pretty stressed out junior here. My dream has always been to be an engineer and I'm thinking of merging that with military service. Could anyone tell me which branch of the military is best for engineering?
Your career ambitions are commendable! Each branch of the military can provide ample opportunities for someone interested in engineering. The 'best' one is more dependent on your personal interests, and the kind of engineering you're interested in.
First off, the Navy has the Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate Program (NUPOC) which is great for those interested in nuclear engineering. The program is highly competitive, but it offers training in state-of-the-art nuclear technology and hands-on experience at sea. If naval engineering or marine engineering interests you, obviously the Navy would be a good fit.
Next, the Army Corps of Engineers is a well-known engineering branch responsible for public works, infrastructure, and military installations. The Army also offers the Corps of Engineers Career Program which provides developmental education and training opportunities for engineer employees.
The Air Force's Civil Engineer Corps specializes in a variety of disciplines, including electrical, environmental, mechanical, and civil engineering. If you're more interested in aerospace and aviation, the Air Force could offer a great avenue.
Lastly, the Coast Guard, while smaller, does engage in a lot of infrastructure and naval engineering as well.
Keep in mind, all branches also support cybersecurity and IT, if that interests you. Military service can be immensely rewarding and is an opportunity to get real world engineering experience. Be sure to also look into scholarships like the ROTC, which can help fund your education in exchange for service.
