When are Most College Application Deadlines?

Junior in high school here, starting to plan out my application timeline for next year. Can anyone give me a general idea about when most college application deadlines are? How early should I ideally begin working on applications? I know it might vary depending on the college, but any broad insight would be helpful.

For most colleges, the regular decision application deadlines are between January 1st and January 15th. However, some schools do have later deadlines in February or even March, but those are less common. If you are interested in applying Early Decision or Early Action - which typically provides an edge in the admissions process - those deadlines tend to be much earlier, often in November.

In terms of when you should ideally start working on your applications, the summer before your senior year is often a good time to begin. This will give you ample time to reflect, brainstorm, and draft your essays, short answers, and gather all the necessary materials for your application. Having an early start also gives you the opportunity to seek feedback on your writing from teachers or mentors. Remember that the Common Application opens on August 1st, so that's an excellent time to start filling out basic application details.

If you're planning to ask teachers for recommendation letters, it's a good idea to do so in spring of your junior year or early in your senior year. This gives them plenty of time to craft a thoughtful letter.

Also, make sure to pay attention to the financial aid deadlines, which may be different from the admission application deadlines. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) becomes available on October 1st and should be completed as soon as possible to maximize your eligibility for financial aid.

Finally, remember that these dates can fluctuate somewhat from year to year or college to college. Therefore, it's essential to double-check the deadline for each school on your list to ensure you don't miss any critical dates. Hope this helps, and good luck with your applications!
