Is a college essay required for every university application?

This might be a newbie question, but do all colleges require an essay when you apply? I'm trying to figure out my schedule and workload, and this would really help with my planning.

Not at all a newbie question – it's great that you're planning ahead! The answer is that not all colleges require an essay for admission, but many do. Typically, schools that do require essays use them as a way to get to know the applicant beyond grades and test scores. For instance, the Common Application, which many colleges and universities use, includes essay prompts that are meant to let your personality and experiences shine through.

However, some colleges, particularly state schools or smaller institutions, may not require an essay, especially if they use their own application systems. It's important to check the admissions requirements for each school you are interested in to be sure. Start by looking at the admissions or FAQ page on their website. It's good you're thinking ahead – essays can be a significant part of your application, and if needed, you'll want to give yourself plenty of time to brainstorm, write, and revise.
