Feeling a little bit overwhelmed… I've started looking into post-graduation military options and I'm not totally sure of everything. I thought there were only 3 branches, but somebody mentioned 6 branches of the U.S. military. Can anyone clear this up for me please?
Sure thing! The United States Military actually has six branches. Here they are:
1. The Army: As the oldest branch, the Army handles land-based operations and has the largest number of active-duty personnel.
2. The Navy: The Navy is responsible for naval and maritime operations. This includes battles on sea but also in the air and on land.
3. The Air Force: Established in 1947, the Air Force focuses on aerial warfare and air defense.
4. The Marine Corps: This branch serves as the expeditionary force in readiness of the U.S Armed Forces. Marines are often the first on the ground in combat situations.
5. The Coast Guard: Often overlooked, the Coast Guard is responsible for coastal defense and rescue operations, as well as enforcing maritime law. It's unique because it can operate under the Department of Defense or the Department of Homeland Security.
6. Space Force: The newest branch, the Space Force, was established in 2019. Its mission is to organize, train, and equip space forces in order to protect U.S and allied interests in space.
Feel free to continue your exploration and ask more questions. Each branch has unique roles, traditions, and opportunities for service members.
