UMich versus Penn State

Hey guys, I've got an acceptances from both UMich and Penn State for Computer Science. I'm super torn now! Convince me, which one should I go for and why?

Both UMich and Penn State have standout computer science programs, so you can't go wrong with either. That being said, there are several components you could consider when making your decision.

Academics: The University of Michigan's computer science program is widely recognized among the top fifteen worldwide, suggesting a solid curriculum and faculty. Penn State’s Computer Science program is also excellent, though not as highly ranked as UMich.

Alumni network and opportunities: Michigan offers a vast alumni network and is well known in the tech industry, attracting top tech companies for recruitment, which should provide a good range of future internships and job opportunities. Penn State boasts a strong and loyal alumni network, too, recognized as one of the largest dues-paying alumni networks in the world.

Campus access and lifestyle: The social and campus lives are quite different at these two universities. UMich, located in Ann Arbor, provides a diverse cultural scene and is considered one of the best college towns in America. It has a large student population, and the school spirit is high. On the other hand, Penn State's setting is more rural, offering a classic college town experience in State College. State College is a smaller town, but the school spirit at Penn State is incredibly strong, particularly around football.

Finances: Another crucial aspect to consider is the financial feasibility. Given the rising cost of college education, it’s important to weigh in the financial aid packages or scholarships offered by both schools, if applicable.

Personal Preference: Despite what others may tell you, the most important factor should be your personal preference. Some students might prefer smaller class sizes and personalized attention, while others might thrive in a large, diverse student body.
