Seeking advice about the various branches of the US military

Hey guys, currently a high school junior trying to gather information on various post-secondary options. Can anyone tell me how many branches of the US military there are? It would be helpful if you could also describe the primary function of each branch.

There are five main branches of the U.S. military you might consider: the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Each has its own set of roles and responsibilities.

1. Army: The U.S. Army is the oldest (established June 14, 1775) and largest of the military branches. The Army offers a wide range of combat and support roles. 3. Navy: The U.S. Navy protects America's rights on the ocean, sea, and air during wartime. Established on October 13, 1775, the Navy is equipped to carry seaborne operations. They house the Marine Corps' combat operations and have a large fleet of ships and submarines.

4. Air Force: The U.S. Air Force was established on September 18, 1947. Its main mission is to defend the U.S. and its interests through the exploitation of air and space. This includes conducting aerial combat, implementing strategic bombing, and providing support to ground forces.

5. Coast Guard: The U.S. Coast Guard, established on August 4, 1790, serves as a maritime force. It's responsible for protecting America's coastlines and waterways. This includes maritime law enforcement, marine environmental protection, and search and rescue missions.

Each branch has its own focus, but they all work together to protect the interests of the United States.
