What are all 5 branches of the military?

Hey all, I'm currently a junior who's contemplating a military career after high school. I know there are multiple branches, but can someone explain what all 5 U.S. military branches are and a brief overview of what each does? It would help a lot in making my decision.

Responding to your request, here are the 5 branches of the U.S. Military and a brief overview of what each does:

1. U.S. Army: The Army is the oldest and largest branch of the U.S. Military. It's responsible for land-based military operations. It's divided into several different groups, including the Army Reserve and the Army National Guard. Most operations involve fighting on the ground, though there are also Army aviation units.

2. U.S. Navy: The Navy conducts operations at sea, protecting the country's maritime interests both in home waters and abroad. They work in a variety of naval vessels, including submarines, aircraft carriers and destroyers. In addition to combat roles, the Navy also performs humanitarian missions and scientific research.

3. U.S. Air Force: The Air Force oversees everything related to aerial military operations. This involves air combat, but also extends to a variety of functions like missile operations, cyber warfare, and space operations. It's also responsible for military satellites and working on new technology for aerial warfare.

4. U.S. Marine Corps: Considered a department of the Navy, the Marine Corps serves as a quick-response ground combat force. Marines are often the first troops on the ground during a conflict. The corps' primary mission is to 'seize or defend advanced naval bases and land operations to support naval campaigns.'

5. U.S. Coast Guard: Often overlooked, the Coast Guard has a unique role compared to other military branches. It's responsible for domestic waterways and coastlines, enforcing maritime law, conducting search and rescue operations, and maintaining aids to navigation. During wartime, the Coast Guard can be transferred to function as part of the Navy.

Each branch has its own unique culture, requirements, and set of missions, so it's essential to do some personal reflection and a deep dive into each to see which aligns best with your interests, skills, and career aspirations. Good luck with your decisions!
