What's the deal with GPA requirements at San Jose State?

Hey y'all, I've been looking at San Jose State University recently and trying to figure out my chances. Does anybody have a solid understanding of their GPA expectations? Like, is the requirement absolute or do they look at the overall academic progress in a holistic manner? Is there a lower limit or they base it on the average admitted applicant stats? Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Hello! So, for Cal State schools like San Jose State University, the minimum GPA requirement for California residents is 2.5 and for out-of-state applicants, it is 3.0. However, bear in mind that these are the absolute minimums, and admission is likely to be more competitive than this. The average GPA of admitted students at San Jose State tends to be much higher.

Let's remember that while G.P.A is an important factor for admissions, it's not the only one. They also look at your course rigor, the trend of your grades throughout high school (upward trend is generally more favorable), and your extracurricular involvement. Unfortunately, unlike some universities, Cal State schools do not consider essays in their evaluation process.

Lastly, for the 2024-2025 application cycle, San Jose State is test-blind, which means they do not consider SAT or ACT scores in their admissions process at all. So, other aspects of your application like GPA and extracurricular involvement might hold more weight. I hope this information helps!
