University of Utah GPA Calculation

Hey people, UofU hopeful here. Was wondering if anyone could guide me regarding GPA calculation at University of Utah. Like, how it's done and what's considered as a good GPA?

Hello there! The University of Utah, like most colleges and universities, usually calculates your GPA on a 4.0 scale. Each grade you receive in a class is given a numerical equivalent. For example, an "A" is equivalent to a 4.0, a "B" is equivalent to a 3.0, and so on, and it keeps dropping by 1.0 for each letter. If you receive a "+" or a "-", the numerical value is adjusted by 0.3 points. For example, a "B+" would be a 3.3, while a "B-" would be a 2.7.

To calculate your GPA, you need to multiply each equivalent value by the number of credit hours for that course, add up these totals, and then divide by the total number of credit hours you’ve taken. For example, if you've taken a 3 credit-hour course and earned an "A" (4.0), and another 3 credit-hour course where you earned a "B" (3.0), you would do the following calculation: [(34.0)+(33.0)]/(3+3), which would give you a GPA of 3.5.

At the University of Utah, a GPA of 3.5 or higher would generally be considered an excellent GPA, while a GPA of 3.0-3.49 is considered good. However, keep in mind that admissions are based on a variety of factors beyond GPA, including extracurricular activities, leadership roles, community service, personal essays, and letters of recommendation. A high GPA certainly helps, but being well-rounded is also important.

Moreover, it’s also important to consider the specific norm within your chosen major or field. Competitive areas of study or pre-professional tracks might have higher GPA expectations. It's always a good idea to directly reach out to the academic department or admissions office to get a clear picture for your specific situation.

Good luck as you pursue your studies!
