Securing a Nomination to a Military Academy

Hey y'all! I've been dreaming about going to a military academy since middle school, but now that I'm a junior in high school, I'm finding it all a bit overwhelming, especially the part about securing a nomination. Can someone shed some light on this?

Absolutely, happy to help clear things up! To attend a military academy in the US, with the exception of the Coast Guard Academy, you'll need a nomination from a "nominator," which is usually a U.S Senator, U.S Representative, or the Vice President of the US.

To start the process, you generally have to apply for a nomination from these nominators. Check out the websites of your local representative and your states' two senators; they will typically have an application form you can fill out. You usually must submit this application during the spring or summer of your junior year, but deadlines often vary so it's best to check.

The application usually includes elements like your high school transcripts, standardized test scores (e.g., SAT, ACT), extracurricular activities, community service, and leadership experiences. You often need recommendations too, usually from teachers, coaches, or other adults who can speak to your abilities and accomplishments. Finally, be prepared to write a few essays on why you're interested in a military academy and your potential contribution.

After the application, you might get invited for an interview. If you do, dress professionally and prepare to discuss why you're interested in serving your country, what leadership roles you've held, and how you've overcome challenges, as well as your academic achievements.

The nomination does not guarantee acceptance into an academy but without one, admission is extremely unlikely. If you make it through the nomination process, the academy will then review your application separately to determine if they want to extend an offer of appointment.

One final thing to consider: your school counselor can be a great resource in this process, so don't hesitate to reach out for assistance.

Remember it's often a highly competitive process, but your determination and passion play a big role. Keep gathering as much information as you can and best of luck with your process!
