Is the Coast Guard considered a branch of the military?

I’ve been exploring various options for after high school and considering the military path, but I kind of want an option that's a little different. I heard about the Coast Guard, but I'm not sure if it's considered a branch of the military. Can anyone clarify? Also, what's the experience like compared to the other branches?

Yes, the Coast Guard is considered a branch of the military. It's one of the eight uniformed services in the U.S., alongside branches like the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The Coast Guard's primary role is maritime law enforcement, with jurisdiction in both domestic and international waters. This can involve a wide range of duties, such as search and rescue, marine safety, and environmental protection.

Compared to other military branches, the Coast Guard is unique in that it operates under the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime, but can be transferred to the Department of the Navy during times of war or when the President directs.

As for the experience, it can vary greatly depending on your specific role within the Coast Guard, much like in other branches. However, due to its unique mission and smaller size, many members find that the Coast Guard provides a more tight-knit community feel.

Keep in mind that regardless of the branch you choose, military service is a significant commitment and you should consider your interests, skill sets, and long-term goals when making your decision. I would recommend contacting a recruiter for more detailed information about opportunities in the Coast Guard, or any other branch you might be interested in.
