What GPA Do I Need for CalTech?

Hey peeps, I am seriously considering CalTech for my undergrad. Can anyone tell me what the typical GPA requirement is? And apart from GPA, what else do they usually look for? I'm pretty stressed out about building a competitive profile, any advice would be appreciated.

Hello there! CalTech does have a rigorous academic standard, and while they don't specify a minimum GPA requirement, most admitted students have GPAs that are near perfect or perfect. However, keep in mind that GPA isn't the only factor that CalTech considers when evaluating applicants.

For CalTech, standardized testing is also a vital component of your application. The university has reversed its test-optional policy and as of the 2024-2025 application cycle, it requires all applicants to submit an SAT or ACT score. A high score showcasing your aptitude in math and science can be a valuable asset given CalTech's emphasis on these areas.

Apart from your academic performance, CalTech is also interested in your personal traits such as curiosity and determination. They want students who aren’t just academically able but who are also passionate about learning and exploring in their desired field. Evidence of this could be your participation in math or science competitions, independent research, or even just unique class projects you've tackled.

Extracurricular activities, particularly those showing leadership or notable accomplishments, will also add depth to your application. Tiers 1 and 2 activities, as defined in the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars, are especially valuable. Perhaps you've held a leadership role in a club or won an award in a science competition - these would all stand out to CalTech.

The process may feel demanding, but stay focused and true to your academic and extracurricular interests. That authenticity will resonate in your application. All the best with your application process!
