Is there a way to still apply to UMD if my SAT scores aren't stellar?

Hey everyone. So I've been grinding for the SAT and let's just say it hasn't been my strongest suit. Does UMD have other options for admission if I haven't blown the top off my SAT? I've got killer grades and extracurriculars, but just wondering how much they're considering test scores these days.

As of the 2024-2025 application cycle, the University of Maryland (UMD) continues to be test-optional. This means that while UMD does consider SAT and ACT scores in their admissions process, you are not required to submit them. The emphasis remains on your high school coursework, grades, and the rigor of your academic program. Excellent grades and a challenging course load can make you a compelling candidate even without standardized test scores.

You also mentioned having strong extracurricular activities, which is great! Schools like UMD really value demonstrated leadership and commitment in activities outside of the classroom. This could be an opportunity to showcase qualities and skills that aren't represented in your test scores or grades.

Remember, referring to your extracurriculars, concentrate on those where you’ve shown significant commitment and progression, for example, moving up to a management role in a club or achieving a significant honour in a chosen activity. If you have any Tier 1 or Tier 2 activities, go ahead and highlight them as these show high levels of achievement and leadership and can be beneficial to your application.

Even though UMD is test-optional for the 2024-2025 application cycle, if you plan on applying to certain programs, like the Honors College or certain merit scholarships, double-check the requirements as some still require SAT or ACT scores.

Lastly, don't forget to take the time to write a compelling essay that lets the admissions committee know more about you as a person. Reflect on experiences, challenges, or passions that have shaped your identity, your goals, and your perspective on life. Steer clear of common cliche topics, and try to make your story unique and personal, this can really make your application stand out.

So, yes, even without stellar SAT scores, the University of Maryland could still be within your reach! Aim to submit a well-rounded application showing off your academic strengths, dedication to extracurricular activities, and your unique personality in your essays. Good luck!
