What’s the relation between U.S. military branches by size?

The largest branch is the Army, with a size of roughly 480,000 active-duty personnel as of 2024. Due to its ground forces function and wide-ranging missions, it has historically been the largest branch of the U.S. Military.

Following the Army is the Navy, with around 340,000 active-duty personnel. As the central naval warfare branch, it maintains, trains, and equips a combat-ready Naval force capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas.

The Air Force comes next, with about 330,000 active-duty members. This branch is responsible for aerial military operations, defending U.S. airspace and air bases, and building global integrated intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.

The Marine Corps, despite its reputation and significant strategic role, is one of the smaller branches with approximately 186,000 active-duty members. The Marines are often first on the ground in combat situations.

For the Coast Guard, numbers are lower, with about 40,000 active-duty members. While technically a part of the Department of Homeland Security in peacetime, during times of war, the Coast Guard can be transferred to the Department of the Navy, and they play critical roles in defense and law enforcement on the seas.
