Branching out: What's this new military branch I'm hearing of?

Hey everyone. Bit stressed because I'm trying to figure out my life after high school, and I keep hearing about a new military branch that was recently formed? Can some kind soul please tell me more about it, what it does, and maybe how it differs from the rest?

Sure, happy to provide some context. The newest branch of the U.S military you're hearing about is the U.S Space Force. It was officially established as the sixth branch of the U.S Armed Forces in December 2019. Its stated mission is to protect the interests of the United States in space; deter aggression in, from, and to space; and conduct space operations.

In terms of how the Space Force differs from other branches: unlike the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard which operate respectively in land, ocean, and air environments, the Space Force operates in the realm of space. While it primarily conducts and supports orbit-based operations, it isn't about astronaut-level work or exploration. Instead, they manage satellites, tracking systems, and other tech infrastructure critical to U.S. military and commercial operations.

In contrast to the other branches, members of the Space Force are technically known as "Guardians", a title which reflects their duty to guard against adverse actions by other nations in space. Given that this branch is less than a decade old, its structure and operations are continuously evolving. Just like every other military branch, joining the Space Force requires a commitment, and a clear understanding of your career opportunities and growth within the branch.

Remember, your post-high school choices need to align with your long-term goals and interests, whether it's college, a vocational trade, or military service. Discuss your thoughts with trusted adults around you to make an informed decision that suits you best.
