Trimming Down My Common App Essay, Any Tips?

Hey everyone, I've been working on my Common App essay for a while now, and it's currently sitting at around 800 words which is way over the limit. Does anyone have strategies for cutting down the word count without losing the essence of the essay? I really don't want to compromise my personal story, but I also know I need to follow the instructions. Help!

Hello there! I totally understand the challenge you're facing – ensuring your essay retains its power while adhering to the word limit can be tough.

A strategy I often recommend is to focus on the most compelling parts of your story. Look for sentences that don't contribute directly to the main message or takeaway you want the admissions officers to have about you.

Also, check for any repetitive ideas or descriptions that can be condensed. Keep an eye out for adverbs and adjectives; while descriptive, sometimes they can be removed without changing the narrative impact.

For example, instead of saying 'very tired', you could choose a stronger verb like 'exhausted'. Lastly, consider getting a second opinion. Sometimes a fresh set of eyes can help you see where cuts can be made without losing critical elements of your story. Keep at it, and remember that precise, clear writing often makes the strongest impact!
