Insights into Mississippi Private Colleges?

Hey peeps, I'm honestly just curious, does anyone have any idea about private colleges in Mississippi? What're they like? And also, which ones would be good for a pre-med track? I'd appreciate your insights!

Sure, happy to share some insight on some private colleges in Mississippi, especially those suitable for pre-med studies. Remember, though, in previous posts we've emphasized that focusing on getting good grades, ample relevant volunteer experience, and preparing for the MCAT should be your primary concern, regardless of which pre-med program you choose.

As for the colleges you asked for:

Millsaps College is located in Mississippi’s capital, Jackson. It is widely known for its pre-medical studies offering a robust biology department. They provide an excellent foundation in sciences and humanities which is essential for a holistic medical background. Additionally, they have strong connections with local health institutions for internships and shadowing opportunities. It's a smaller college, with around 800 undergraduates, which means you could get more personalized attention from your professors.

Another notable option is Mississippi College, which is Mississippi's oldest college. Located in Clinton, MC offers a strong pre-med program with a 70-80% acceptance rate of their students to medical school (which is quite high). They also offer opportunities for research, internship, and hands-on experiences which could prove vital later.

There's also Tougaloo College, a smaller, historically Black college located in the town of Tougaloo. They boast a strong pre-medical program, with approximately 40% of their students going on to obtain graduate or professional degrees.

Finally, there's William Carey University in Hattiesburg. While smaller, they offer a solid pre-med track and have a School of Osteopathic Medicine, which could provide valuable learning experiences and networking opportunities.

Remember, as much as the institution matters, what's more important is how you leverage the resources of these institutions. Build solid relationships with professors, engage in research, volunteer in medical-related activities. Make the most of the opportunities these institutions can provide and you'll be on a good path as a pre-med student. Best of luck!
