UC Irvine Admission Requirements

Can any previous applicants or current students at UC Irvine shed some light on the UC Irvine admission requirements? Apart from academic performance, what other factors does the university emphasize? Any insight on the holistic review process would be much appreciated!

UC Irvine, like other University of California schools, looks at a wide range of factors in its holistic admission process. One significant aspect of the UC Irvine admission process is the 'a-g' coursework requirement. The 'a-g' requirements are a series of high school courses in various subjects like English, mathematics, and science, that the UC system requires applicants to complete.

Beyond academics, UC Irvine places considerable emphasis on personal insight questions. These written responses provide you an opportunity to showcase your experiences, values, and the unique perspective you bring. They are particularly interested in leadership experiences, commitment to extracurricular activities, and unique challenges you have overcome.

UCI also considers how you have taken advantage of your educational opportunities and the academic rigor of your courses. If you've pursued advanced courses, like AP or Honors, it demonstrates your academic preparation and motivation. Additionally, the school views positively any activities that demonstrate a significant level of responsibility or initiative.

Because UC Irvine is a test-blind school, SAT or ACT scores are not considered in the admissions process. It's essential to keep this in mind when preparing your application.

Finally, even though UC Irvine doesn't specifically consider demonstrated interest, your passion for UCI can be reflected in your personal insight questions. For instance, if you've taken the time to research and understand the school's programs and values and then incorporate these aspects into your responses, it can make your application stand out.

To reiterate, UC Irvine's holistic admissions approach means that no single factor will ensure admission, the following components are considered:

- GPA requirement: You must receive a 3.0 GPA (3.4 for non-California residents) or higher in the 15 required “A-G” subject courses, with no grade lower than a C.

- "A-G”: The 'a-g' requirements are a series of high school courses in various subjects like English, mathematics, and science, that the UC system requires applicants to complete.

- Personal Insight Questions: Your personal insight questions should be exactly that – personal. This is your opportunity to tell us about yourself, what matters to you, your hopes, ambitions, life experiences, and inspirations. First-year applicants choose four out of eight questions to answer.

-Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Credit: Students who earn scores of 3, 4, or 5 on the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) examinations will receive credit toward graduation at UCI. Successfully completing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Exam can also result in credit allowed toward a UC Irvine degree.

The university considers an application holistically when making admission decisions.
