What's the diversity scene like at University of Maryland?

Hey y'all, I've been looking into the University of Maryland and I wanted to learn more about how diverse the campus is. As a prospective student, it's super important for me to be at a place that values a multitude of perspectives. Anyone got any information on this? Thanks in advance!

Hello! University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) prides itself on its diverse student body and commitment to inclusive excellence in higher education. It's historically been successful in attracting students from all over the world and across the United States.

UMD's student population is comprised of individuals from many different backgrounds and cultures. In recent available data showed that UMD's undergraduate population had about 12.1% African American students, 20.1% Asian students, 9.3% Hispanic or Latino students, and about 38.2% white students, with the remaining identifying as multi-racial, international, or unknown.

Moreover, UMD has a wide range of student-led organizations, clubs and initiatives that accommodate a variety of interests, cultures, and backgrounds. This includes cultural associations, religious groups, identity-based clubs and more which could make you feel welcomed and understood in a complex, multicultural student body.

Also, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at UMD offers numerous programs and resources aimed at fostering a welcoming and inclusive campus environment. Some of these include dialogues on diversity, diversity and inclusion training, and a variety of events for heritage months, among others.

That said, it's also important to hear from current UMD students about their personal experiences—so you might consider reaching out to UMD students or alumni or visiting the campus to get a true sense of what the diversity scene is like.

Keep in mind that diversity is not only about statistics and programs but also about the everyday experiences of students, so it can help to do a little more digging to ensure that UMD will provide the environment you're hoping for. Hopefully this helps, and best of luck with your college search!
