What's the best way to include my resume in the Common App?

I'm polishing up my application and I've got a solid resume that highlights all my work and extracurriculars, but I'm not sure where or how I'm supposed to add my resume in the Common App. Can someone walk me through the steps?

Certainly happy to help you navigate this part of your Common App! The platform does not have a dedicated upload section for resumes as they expect most information to be included within the application itself. That said, you can still include your resume if you think it adds value to your application beyond what the activities section covers. First, double-check that your resume doesn't simply repeat information. Admissions officers appreciate brevity and clear, concise information. If your resume provides additional context or details about particular achievements or responsibilities that you couldn't fit in the activities section, then it's worth including.

If you do decide to include your resume, some schools have a 'Writing Supplement' section for uploads like this. Look for an option to upload additional documents and you can attach your resume there. Ensure your resume is clear, professional, and in PDF format to prevent any formatting issues upon upload. However, not all schools provide this option. In that case, you can send your resume directly to the admissions office via email, clearly stating your name and application ID for reference, or ask if there's another preferred method during a campus visit or college interview.

Don't forget, the Common App activities section is the primary place for presenting your extracurricular involvement, as well as the Additional Information section if needed. As an example, a student I advised had significant independent research experience that couldn't be sufficiently detailed within the activities section; we included his resume in the schools that allowed additional uploads, which gave us the space to elaborate on his work. Remember to tailor your resume to highlight what's most important and reflects your strengths and commitment. Wishing you the best with your applications!
