What's the breakdown of all branches in the US military?

Hey everyone, I've been looking into post-grad alternatives to college, and the military is something that's come to mind. Did a bit of research and found there's more than the standard Army, Navy, Air Force stuff. I heard there's actually up to 7 uniformed services? I'm not too clear on this. Could someone break down the differences between all these uniformed branches of the US military?

Sure, you're correct! There are indeed seven federal uniformed services in the United States. These include the five armed forces plus two additional uniformed services. Here's a brief rundown:

1. The U.S Army: This is the oldest branch of the U.S. Military, established in 1775. They primarily handle land-based military operations.

2. The U.S Navy: Established shortly after the Army in 1775, the Navy's main role is sea-based defense, but they're also involved in air and space operations.

3. The U.S Air Force: This branch, established in 1947, focuses primarily on air and space defense. They provide air support for land and naval forces and aid in the recovery of troops in the field.

4. The U.S Marine Corps: Also established in 1775, the Marine Corps serve as the expeditionary force in readiness of the U.S. military. They're often the first on the ground in combat situations.

5. The U.S Coast Guard: Established in 1915, the Coast Guard oversees maritime law enforcement, maritime security, environmental stewardship, and search and rescue missions. During times of peace, it operates under the Department of Homeland Security, but it can be transferred to the Navy in times of war.

Those are the five armed forces. Now for the other two uniformed services:

6. The U.S Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC): This force consists of health professionals who are on call to provide health services and care in areas affected by disease or disaster.

7. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps (NOAA Corps): The smallest of the uniformed services, the NOAA Corps is focused on the study of Earth's natural resources in both oceanic and atmospheric areas.

Each of these branches has its own unique missions, responsibilities, and benefits. It's great to see that you are considering all your options for life after high school. Researching each of these branches thoroughly is a good move to ensure you make the choice that's best for your personal goals. Best of luck!
