How to calculate high GPA?

Hello community! I've been a bit confused about the calculations involved in determining my high school GPA. Could anyone explain the process for calculating a high GPA or perhaps link me to a trusted calculator? I appreciate your help!

Sure! There are a number of ways to calculate GPA, but I'll explain the most common one.

GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a system used in the U.S. to quantitatively assess a student's academic achievement in high school or college.

Firstly, your school will assign a numerical value or 'grade point' to each letter grade you've received. An 'A' usually corresponds to a 4, a 'B' to a 3, 'C' to a 2, 'D' to a 1, and 'F' usually means 0 points. Plus and minus grades like 'A-' or 'B+' may have variations on these numbers depending on your school system. For example, an 'A-' might be worth 3.7 and a 'B+' might be worth 3.3.

You'll then need to accumulate these grade point values for all the classes you've taken and find their average. Here's how:

1. Assign a point value to each of your final grades for each class, based on the scale I mentioned.

2. Multiply the point value for each grade by the number of credits the class was worth (for high school this is often simply '1', but differs for college and certain high school courses like APs).

3. Sum up all these values.

4. Divide this total by the sum of all the credits of the classes you've taken.

Here is a simple example: if you got an A (4 points) in History, a B (3 points) in Math, a B (3 points) in English, and an A (4 points) in Science, your GPA would be calculated as follows:

Grade points total = 4 (History) + 3 (Math) + 3 (English) + 4 (Science) = 14

Sum of all credits = 4 (as each class is typically worth 1 credit in high school)

GPA = Grade points total / Sum of all credits = 14 / 4 = 3.5

Please remember this is an unweighted GPA calculation and your school might also calculate a weighted GPA, which could add more points for honors, AP, or IB classes.

For a quick calculation, there are numerous trusted online GPA calculators available. Just make sure you have all your grades and credit information on hand when using them. CollegeVine has a helpful GPA calculator you can use.
