What's the Total cost of attending Duke University?

Hello everyone. I’m seriously considering applying to Duke, but I’m having a hard time pinning down an accurate estimate of the total cost — not just tuition, but also room and board, books and supplies, and other expenses. Can any Duke students or alums help me get a sense of it? Thanks!

The comprehensive cost breakdown for Duke University includes several components: tuition, room and board, books and supplies, and personal expenses among others.

The tuition for the 2024-2025 academic year is approximately $66,325. The exact figures can vary slightly each year as the university may increase the tuition.

Room and board are another substantial cost. For an undergraduate living on campus, the figure usually falls in the range of $16,838. This includes both your dorm room and the dining plan.

Books and supplies are, of course, dependent on your major and specific class selections. However, as a broad average, you can expect to spend about $1,300 per year.

Personal expenses cover a wide array of potential costs—from laundry to travel to personal hygiene. A rough estimation for these costs is around $2,600 per year.

Finally, there's a mandatory health fee, which tends to be around $1,000 annually.

Altogether, you're looking at a comprehensive cost of attendance around $88,063 per year.

However, keep in mind that this is the sticker price, and many students will receive financial aid that significantly reduces this cost. As Duke practices a need-blind admission policy and meets 100% of demonstrated financial need, it's always worthwhile to apply for financial aid regardless of your household income level.
