I've been accepted into both Berklee and Juilliard and I'm not sure how to decide between them. Anyone have any advice based on personal experiences or other knowledge?
Congratulations on being accepted into two respected institutions for music study! One of the first things to note about Berklee and Juilliard are their primary focuses. Juilliard, a traditionally classical music institution, is known worldwide for its rigorous approach to classical music with also strong offerings in dance and drama. At Juilliard, you're immersed in a traditional, conservatory-style curriculum which can be more structured and academically rigorous.
On the other hand, Berklee delivers a contemporary music education. A major aspect of Berklee’s curriculum revolves around jazz, pop, and more modern styles of music. It is heavily performance-based and encourages the student to create original compositions.
Consider the type of music you are interested in and would like to pursue, as well as the academic environment you would prefer. If classical music and a more traditional academic setting are your preferences, Juilliard may be a better choice. If you're interested in modern music styles and a more performance-driven program, Berklee could suit you better.
Also, consider location and opportunities for performance, collaborative work, and internships that may matter in your future career. Juilliard is situated in New York, with access to a lively culture and arts scene. Or, if the blend of academe, tech, and music industries in Boston is more appealing to you, Berklee is a great choice.
Lastly, it isn't a bad idea to reach out to current students or alumni from both institutions to get their insights. They may provide unique perspectives based on their experiences that will help inform your decision. Good luck!
