Finding Scholarships and Grants

A little stressed here with all the financial aspect of college. What's the most simple way to find and apply for scholarships and grants? I don't even know where to start. Any tips would be awesome.

The financial aspect of college can be quite overwhelming, but with a systematic approach, you can surmount this challenge.

First, you need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, which schools use to determine your eligibility for federal, state, and school-sponsored financial aid, including some scholarships and grants. Be aware of the deadline for your state and school.

As for scholarships, start by exploring resources already available to you. Your high school's guidance or counseling office should be armed with resources and reliable scholarship search platforms. Don't forget about community organizations or local businesses that may offer scholarships to graduating seniors.

Additionally, universities often offer merit-based scholarships, so when you are applying to schools, check their scholarship page to see if they have an application separate from the admission application.

Also, focus on local scholarships as they typically have less competition than national scholarships. You could speak with your guidance counselor about scholarships sponsored by local organizations. They usually have unique eligibility requirements.

Online platforms can provide a wealth of scholarship opportunities. These platforms function as search engines and databases for scholarships and usually provide an organized way to sift through multiple opportunities and determine which ones might be up your alley. Some even allow you to customize your search to match your traits and skills to potential scholarships.

Lastly, prioritize scholarships with smaller award amounts. Many students chase the most lucrative scholarships, leaving plenty of smaller awards with fewer applicants. These could be less competitive and could add up to a significant amount.

Approaching it this way makes the task less daunting. And remember, every bit of aid you receive is less that you will have to repay later. Happy scholarship hunting!
