Credit Cards for College Students

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone could help me out with some advice. I'm trying to start building my credit as an upcoming college student, but I have no credit history. What would you guys suggest as the easiest card to get approved for in my situation?

Certainly, it's a wise step to start building your credit as you begin your college journey. Different credit card companies offer 'Student Credit Cards' specifically designed for college students with limited or no credit history. Some of these cards actually reward you for good grades along with the usual cash back benefits on purchases.

The Discover it® Student Cash Back card is a well-regarded option in this category. It offers 5% cash back on rotating categories (up to $1500 spent per quarter) and 1% on all other purchases. Additionally, they provide a $20 statement credit for each school year your GPA is 3.0 or higher, for up to five years.

Capital One QuicksilverOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card is another viable choice. It offers a simpler cash-back scheme of 1.5% on all purchases and doesn't involve keeping track of category spending. They also offer tools to help you track your credit score and increase your credit limit after a few months of consistent and responsible usage.

Secured credit cards are another option. Like the Capital One Secured Mastercard, these cards require a refundable deposit that becomes your initial credit line. For example, a $200 deposit will provide you with a $200 credit limit. These cards provide a lower risk option for credit card companies and can be easier for students with no credit history to get approved.

Remember to use your new card responsibly: avoid carrying a balance when possible by paying off your charges each month, never miss a payment, and try to keep your usage below 30% of your credit limit. Regular, responsible use will help you to build a strong credit history over time.
