Common App submission timing?

Alright folks, the clock's ticking and senior year is just around the corner. I need to get my game plan ready for applications. So, when is the first day we can actually submit our Common Apps to colleges? Does it vary by school, or is there a universal 'go' date?

Great question, and it's wonderful to see you planning ahead! The Common Application generally opens for the new application season on August 1st. On this date, you'll be able to fill out and submit your applications. However, in terms of when colleges start actually reading applications, that will vary from school to school. Many schools with early decision or early action deadlines in early November won't start reading any applications until after that date has passed, to create a level playing field, so there's no need to submit right when the Common App opens. This policy also applies for many regular decision deadlines in early or mid January. Take your time, especially with your personal statement and any school-specific supplemental essays, to make sure your application is as strong as possible.

On the other hand, some schools operate under a rolling admissions policy, which means you do want to submit as early as possible—the longer you wait, the more competitive the process gets, as more spots in the class have already been filled. You still want to take the time to make sure your application casts you in the best light possible, but you should put applications to any rolling schools on the front burner.

If you're wondering what admissions policies each of your colleges has, head to their admissions website—most of them will have a calendar or table clearly showing which dates are most important. If you're a unclear on anything, you can always reach out to an admissions representative directly, as that's what they're there for! Their contact information should be listed on the admissions website, possibly under a tab called something like "Our Team."

I hope this helps, and best of luck as your senior year begins! Remember, the college process is a marathon, not a sprint — pace yourself and you'll do great!
