What's the connection between NCIS and the military branches?

Hello everyone, I've heard about this acronym NCIS in relation to the military, but I'm not exactly sure what it stands for or how it's really connected to the military branches. Is NCIS an actual branch or more of a division of a branch? I'd really appreciate if anyone could help me clarify this.

NCIS stands for Naval Criminal Investigative Service. It's not a branch of the military, but rather an independent law enforcement agency that primarily investigates criminal activity where there's a Navy or Marine Corps affiliation. NCIS's mission involves not only criminal investigations but also counterterrorism and counterintelligence duties.

Think of it this way: just as cities or states have police departments to maintain law and order, the military has the likes of NCIS to do the same within their ranks and jurisdiction. So, while NCIS isn't a military branch unto itself, the agency works in close collaboration with the U.S. Navy and the Marine Corps, serving to uphold law, order, and security within these branches.

Though NCIS is U.S. Navy-centric, its scope reaches globally, providing services to the entire U.S. Department of Defense. I hope this clarifies the role and function of NCIS in relationship to the military branches!
