So, swimming is my thing and I'd love to continue that in college. Anyone know which colleges (doesn't matter their ranking in general) are known for having good swimming programs or even for being easier to get on the team? Thanks in advance for any answers and info!
Based on competitiveness and the reputation of their programs, some really strong swimming colleges come to mind.
The NCAA divides teams into Division I, II, and III, based on the size of the school and the emphasis on athletics. Division I schools offer the highest level of competition, and for these schools, make sure you meet their athletic and academic standards.
In the Division I, schools like Stanford University, University of Virginia, University of California–Berkeley (Cal), and University of Texas at Austin come to mind. These schools often fare exceptionally well during collegiate swimming championships both on the men's and women's sides. Other Division I schools with competitive programs include the University of Florida and the University of Georgia.
If the idea of competing at a slightly lower division appeals to you, check out some Division II & III schools. These schools sometimes allow a greater balance between academic pursuits and athletics. Schools like Kenyon College (Division III) and Drury University (Division II) are consistently high performers in their respective divisions.
One thing to note is that the admissions process for athletic recruitment often follows a different timeline than traditional applications, so you'll want to start spreading your interests and reaching out to coaches preferably during your Junior year, if not earlier.
Always remember, though, to balance athletics with academics. Make sure you are interested in the programs of study at any school to which you're considering applying. You're going there for an education, after all!
